Smart home products for convenience, security, and energy saving

The Dutch smart home market reached a record value of €6.5 billion in 2024, despite a slight decline in ownership from 61% to 56% of households. This growth is driven by higher spending per household on smart devices for security, comfort, and energy saving.

Market growth of smart home in the Netherlands

The Netherlands' smart home market shows impressive figures with 4.7 million households owning at least one smart home product. The 4% growth to €6.5 billion is mainly due to increased investments in smart lighting, household appliances, and speakers. Forecasts point to an adoption rate of 80-90% by 2030, underlining the future of connected living.

Smart security gains popularity

Security products are experiencing strong growth with 2.7 million households (32%) having purchased smart security equipment. Smart doorbells lead with 19% ownership, followed by security cameras at 13%. The market value grew from €734 million in 2022 to an expected €1.1 billion in 2025. Remarkably, 84% of users are willing to share camera footage with the police for safety purposes. Video doorbells offer modern security and peace of mind.

Energy saving as main motivation

The 'household and comfort' category dominates with a 61% market share worth €4 billion. Smart lighting and energy management systems such as wifi plugs with energy meter help households reduce energy costs. Automatic temperature control and time saving are the primary motivations for purchase, with sustainability becoming increasingly important. Smart plugs make energy management simple and efficient.

Privacy challenges with growing adoption

Despite the growth, 83% of Dutch people worry about privacy with smart devices. At the same time, 40% never think about it with household appliances. IoT ownership rose from 81% in 2020 to 89% in 2024, highlighting the importance of privacy protection in innovation. Smart smoke detectors and gateway systems offer safety without privacy compromises. Sensors can be used in a privacy-friendly way for optimal comfort.

Smart home technology offers unprecedented opportunities for comfort, safety, and energy saving. Invest wisely in solutions that improve your way of life while contributing to a sustainable future.
